just TEACHERS

Introduction

This pack has been written to help teachers of Citizenship and PSHE address issues of disability as part of the Citizenship curriculum in Key Stages 2 and 3.

This is an important area for a great many people in the UK one in four families has a member who is disabled in some way and social attitudes and values are changing rapidly, not least in the increasing recognition of the rights of people with disabilities to a full and fulfilling life.

At the same time, reports of outright prejudice and unwitting discrimination still abound. Material of this kind seeks to inform, raise awareness and to encourage a more responsible attitude towards others. This is citizenship in action.

There is a need for up-to-date materials reflecting the many recent changes in this area relating to renewed concerns about social justice and equality for all citizens. It is highly appropriate that the publication of this pack coincides with the European Year of People with Disabilities. John Grooms, supported by Barclays Plc, has made an important contribution to education for citizenship through the provision of this free pack to schools. Support will continue to be available on the 'just like us! website
